Herbalife was founded in 1980 by the charismatic leader, Mark Hughes. Mark had a background that was not conducive to success, unless you believe that tragedy and personal challenges shape you more than success.

Mark Hughes had several brushes with the law and was a high school drop out. His mother died when he was a teenager, Mark claims, because of misuse of diet pills. It was through this sudden loss than motivated Mark to create Herbalife.
His videos can still be viewed online and there is no doubt that his power, enthusiasm and belief was the cornerstone of the company’s early success. Thousands of MLM companies are launched every year by entrepeneurs and only a few make it past the first year. Herbalife recently celebrated 28 years in business.
However, it was during the 20 year milestone that Mark met his untimely death due to an overdose of pain killers. It appears that the healthy lifestyle he proclaimed was clouded by personal trauma.
