The industry has more nutrition and health products than it needs right now. The proliferation of new industry niches like energy, real estate, financial services, baskets and plastic containers should remove from our minds any doubt that any product can be distributed via a network of IBO’s.

Even candles!

The story of PartyLite is unusual because of its beginnings. In order to understand the legacy of Partylite we need to go back…WAY back to its roots in 1909.

No, that is not a misprint.

Today, it’s pretty common for a woman to have her own business. But in the early 1900s, it was very unusual. Yet Mabel Baker, just like the many thousands of women who would come after her, had a vision of transforming her life. In the early 1900’s transforming your life didn’t require a self-help guru, motivational speeches, or rallies to infuse belief and wisdom into your head. (They didn’t have those!) Instead, transformation meant having enough coal to keep the house warm, fine china to enjoy dinner and perhaps some new clothes every once in a while.

Maybel Baker was into candles.

In the early 1900s, schoolteacher Mabel Baker began crafting candles from the wild bayberries that grew in her native Cape Cod. At first she gave them as gifts to her friends and family, but it wasn’t long before her entrepreneurial spirit took over. With a lot of persistence, hard work and support from her husband, by 1909 Mabel turned her love of candles into a business. Selling candles to friends, neighbors and shops required work, persistence and travel. Maybel didn’t ask for permission. She didn’t need to. Fortunately for her, her passion for her product was easily communicated to her customers and distributors.

Mabel remained passionately committed to growing her business throughout her life. When she died at the age of 94 in 1965, what had begun with a single bayberry had become a business worth $6 million. Today, she remains the company’s role model for success.

Door to door sales, of course, became less popular as people spent more time away from home. The solution for a company like PartyLite was the home party concept made popular by Avon, Tupperware and others.

When PartyLite was acquired in 1990 by Blyth, Inc., the organization’s full potential was unleashed. Today, PartyLite Consultants number over 68,000 around the world. And what began as a single line of bayberry candles has expanded to an extensive selection of top-quality home fragrances and accents with 100 or more new products each year. But most important, throughout this growth, PartyLite has remained true to the values Mabel evoked with her very first candle: honesty, integrity, fairness and quality.

Do they sell candles?

Not really. Ask any Partylite representative and they’ll tell you the candle is the tool, but the real message comes from the fragrance, aroma and atmosphere when you enjoy the candles.

Aromatherapy works, especially in MLM.
